How To Wear All Grey Without Looking Boring
Getting Ready Time: 1 hour and 12 minutes. Believe it or not, but it is a lot harder to put together an outfit in neutral tones than it is to throw some colour into the equation and call it a day. Accessories matter a lot more; precision and exciting details are a key to a great look.
It seems that time is just flying by. It’s mid-October, and I already walked past my first Christmas tree this year. I guess 2017 is slowly heading to an end. Which is not exactly bad, as 2017 was clearly off its rails. It was one storm after another: we had to deal with Brexit, Trump was elected president, people keep telling me that they liked Lalaland, hurricane Ophelia made people tweet ‘apocalypses!’ at a sight of blood-red sun and I almost entirely stopped wearing colour for the last three months. I honestly do not know what part of this year was the craziest; I guess Trump and Lalaland would have to share the first place, but my lack of interest in colour would most certainly place solidly at a second.
Luckily, as we entered September, the curse has been lifted, and I am gradually starting to feel the pull of the familiar. I no longer feel content in grey-black outfits. Tingly orange jumpers, red hot boots and emerald blazers are creeping back into my wardrobe. Yet, despite my immense excitement of wearing my bright pink coat once again, there is a small part of me that remembers the ease and morning simplicity of my grey-black outfits.
As depressing as my previous wardrobe was, it made it very easy to get dressed in the mornings, and I do miss that. After all, I have never been and never will be a morning person. I wake up grumpy, slightly dazed and completely unable to function before I have breakfast, so shaving off just a couple of extra minutes from my getting ready time goes a long way. Especially now, that I am trying to do several jobs at once. And yet, wearing a grey tee with a pair of jeans is just so uninspiring. It is not an outfit that aspires to a great day. It’s not even something worthy of a name ‘outfit’.
What I needed was some balance. There has to be something that can bring structure and excitement as well as ease to my life.
So, I went out[1] and found this suit in this season’s trendiest print, which hits just the right spot. It’s simple, just a little bold and if you use the right accessories, it makes exactly the right statement. And what I love about this grey check is that it is so easy to pair. You can wear it with any shoes and coats. The only thing I would advise is to stay away from black. Grey suit with black shoes and coat scream corporate drone and boring personality. It feels like a silent cry for help. A sartorial version of begging for antidepressants. And if you are going to go with grey shoes, I would suggest a contrasting coat, just so you do not to blend in with the shadows too much.
